Dolby Surround Speakers

Dolby is a British-American company specialized in developing high-quality audio and surround systems technology. The company was founded by Ray Dolby in Britain 1965 but he moved the company in the United States in the 1970’s. The company initially did not produce consumer products but later it licensed its technology to consumer electronics companies. Dolby introduced several important innovations including Dolby Stereo which was first encoded on the movie A Star Is Born in 1976. Shortly afterwards most of the cinemas worldwide were equipped by Dolby Stereo which was slightly adjusted for home use and introduced as the Dolby Surround in the early 1980’s.

Dolby surround is a customer version of the Dolby multichannel analog film sound format featuring left, center, right and Mono surround. Today’s most commonly used multichannel home theater surround sound involving five channels for five speakers (two speakers at the front left and right, one in the center and two at the rear left and right) and one channel for the Low-Frequency Effect subwoofer dates from the mid 1990’s when Dolby Laboratories, Inc. introduced the Dolby Digital which has become a worldwide standard in surround sound.
